My notes state: "KENTUCKY WARBLER at BDP! Along Bayside Drive near its intersection with Fernleaf. I was walking by a nice clump of mature Myoporum (which was as much as 20-25 yards long), and decided to look inside the somewhat isolated clump and give it a few pishes. Immediately in response to the pishing a bird began giving a unique chip (sounding to me somewhat like a loud version of a Hermit Thrush "chup"); but initially the bird just called and didn't move into view for me. Curtis, across the street, yells "that sounds like a Kentucky Warbler". He'd just heard a KEWA up in Goleta that appears to be wintering (which is the first record of a wintering KEWA for California, so this was the second!). I pished once more and there it was, in Myoporum right in front of me! YIKES!! First OC record! Quite a thrill! Curtis came over inside the Myoporum where I was watching the bird, and saw it briefly before it left. Brian also saw it soon afterward, after we managed to find him elsewhere in the area. We went back later and had better views. The bird crossed the street once or twice to the north side of Bayside Drive, where there was a Pepper tree, pyracantha, and another Myoporum hedge. I assumed this bird to be a male (adult male?). Very bright. Olive-green above, entirely yellow below. The "mask" and crown were quite black, especially along side of the crown, above the bill, in the lores, and down side of the face onto side of the throat. Where black came to a point on lower sides of the throat, the point slightly flared in. Top of crown (center) appeared to be a blackish-olive. Seems to nervously flick wings and tail occasionally. Seemed to show a somewhat "flat-crowned" appearance." [Note: this description is a bit brief so have taken a photo of original notes in which I drew a small sketch of the birds head, showing the rather unique pattern, including the black "mask" with yellow supercilium connected to a partial eyering (yellow, broken anteriorly).
