I was creeping up on the Freckleds, feeling very pleased with how the day so far had panned out, and then... that's when I had a sudden, shocking realisation; that frail whistle piping from the reeds... that was a GRASSBIRD!!! I couldn't believe it; I couldn't!! It'd been a full two years since I last saw them here, and even then that was out at the smaller Lagoon across the road... but here they were, in the thick, tall ranks of reeds assembled down in the Southern Corner!! I at first felt privileged just to hear them, and then to catch a tiny-yet-unmistakable glimpse of a bird bounding off into the thicker reeds... but then, slowly but surely, the birds began to work their way towards the edge of the reeds right in front of me!!! For a minute or two they tantalised me, clearly visible as they peered at each other but obscured by leaves... and then... breathtakingly, astoundingly, one of the Grassbirds popped out onto a perfect perch in the sun, bobbing up and down, crest flared, tawny shades absolutely glowing!!! What followed weren't just my first photos of Grassbirds at Goulds... they were also my best photos and looks into the lives of Grassbirds full stop.
