First observation at 1245. 2 counted on property. Heard a 'woosh' as an adult SSHA flew in to one of the reach 3 ponds from the west, over my head, unsuccessfully ambushing the birds there (but successfully ambushing me!). RWBL and one SOSA scattered. The SSHA shook its feathers, flew a meter or two to a slightly higher perch in the dead Alnus incana over the pond, then flew N to the fenceline, after which I lost sight of it. At 1413, a SSHA (possibly the same individual again?) took off from chokecherries in the E part of reach 3 and circled over the grassland to the north with flaps; a male AMKE with all primaries intact dove at it briefly. Later, in reach 4, flushed a definite second individual from along the creek with prey in its talons. It took cover first in a Salix eriocephala near the AMKE nest box, then flushed to the east twice more as I got closer. After the second (of three) flushes, the AMKE pair flew to the nest box and at least one of them vocalized softly (recording). I assume that the SSHA flushed short distances and seeked cover instead of departing the area because it was still eating its meal. Detections (number 15-minute intervals in which the species was detected): 4 on property.
