***mega. Roughly one record every couple years in Massachusetts. There are probably about 30 records for the state. Upon arriving to Big Station Pond, I started scanning and this bird zoomed directly in front of me out of the blue. I assume I had inadvertently flushed it while walking the edge and unable to view the pond, and then it flew back in. This was a large, black-and-white shorebird with extremely long, red legs. The dorsal and ventral sides of the wings, back, back of the neck and cap were black. The rest of the body was white. The bill was long, slender, and black. The bird lifted on its own another time, and was harassed by terns in flight. However, it returned to the pond and was still there when I left. It mostly foraged actively in shallow water, but preened for about 20 minutes too.
