On the Connecticut River, grouped tightly together and diving frequently. At first, we were just scanning with binoculars, and we passed these (quite distant) birds off as cormorants. After looking them over a second time, we noticed that something wasn't quite right about their shape, and that they seemed to have white faces. Luckily, we had our scope handy, and trained it on them. As we suspected, they were not cormorants, but breeding-plumaged Red-necked Grebes! Clearly identifiable through the scope, they had black caps, white faces, long, sharp yellowish bills, long rufous necks, and dull gray-brown bodies. I was also lucky to have my camera handy, so I got some decent digi-scoped documentation shots of these birds.
