center bird is specimen being reported
観察結果の詳細
I am entering now in Historical Acct. per the new proposed dead bird policy that allows dead bird only if fresh and rare. Fresh DEAD BIRD found at curbside by August Mirabella apparently hit by a car and being entered here by August Mirabella. Obviously, I believed it was freshly killed at the time and presumably it didn't smell or show signs of decay. I found it on way to work. This was sent to Academy of Nat. Sciences and is Specimen # 175380. It was documented to & accepted by BRC (PORC) decades later. Pictures taken 1/11/2011 included show center bird with specimen number and Rallus longirostris(scientific name at time) on the label in direct comparison with King Rail specimen below and another Clapper above..The specimens for appropriate comparison were from the same time frame Sept/Oct.. I have placed the map site at road edge where I found it, and you can see the large catch basin with appropriate habitat. Nate Rice of the Academy took the pictures and provided the folowing comments to me: “Based on the gray cheeks and lores, duller underparts and less distinct barring on the flanks, your bird would be considered a Clapper. I'm sure that it was Frank Gill that made this original designation, but many other ornithologists would have also looked at the skin, including recently James Maley (a Clapper/King Rail expert from LSU). No one has suggested that this is anything but Clapper.” Regarding the length of the specimens in the pictures, Nate said, “Any difference in body length would be the result of prep style.”
