This is an unsual call, almost like a song. The bird that was recorded is the same bird in the photos. It was responding to a pygmy owl imitation, so maybe an alarm call? That said, I heard this call elsewhere on the trail without imitating the owl, so another possibility is that it is related to territoriality or pairbonding early in the breeding season. A second bird accompanied this one (acting like a pair).
