A pair of Pacific Black Ducks perched on a stump, preening. The Pacific Black Duck (Anas superciliosa) is one of Australia’s commonest and best-known ducks, occurring throughout the continent in all but the most arid areas and throughout the Pacific Region. Pacific Black Ducks are dabbling ducks, feeding on seeds and leaves of aquatic plants but also taking small invertebrates. Black Ducks also graze on grass, and become very confiding, often begging visitors to urban lakes for food. This pair of Pacific Black Ducks were perched on a stump in Lake Monger near Perth, preening. The lake had a severe blue-green algal (Cyanobacterial) bloom – you can see the algal scum on their legs and feet. Elevation: 13 m. Date added to IBC: June 24, 2018.
