観察結果の詳細
Small, strikingly black and white terns with small, fine, all black bills. The birds had much darker blackish grey upper surfaces on backs, wings, and tails that other more locally common small terns (Common and Arctic). The upper surfaces were not uniformly coloured - they were patchy with darker patches, but all of the feathers on the mantles and wings were darker than those on Common and Arctic Terns. The birds were obviously small (appeared significantly smaller than Common and Arctic Terns). The birds had smudgy, darkish caps on the rear of their crowns and solid, dark marks extending down behind the eyes. They also had some dark smudgy markings extending down onto their flanks/side of their necks. Seen well as the birds preened and rested on a log in the marsh at a distance of about 130 - 150 m. The birds were part of a large cohort of birds dislocated to NS by Hurricane Dorian. Photo attached.
