With Horned Grebe for comparison, both just feet offshore, generally opposite “Quarry” sign on Marine Ave, as Tommy G. reported Sunday. Fishing calmly off huge school of shad (fish IDd by Bryan P.) right up to beach. Dark tip to bill; although actively diving, while on surface would “straighten up” head feathers displaying a peak more or less above the eye or at the top of a steep forehead; contrarily, Horned Grebe has white bill tip and more sloped forehead with a peak nearer the nape or is more flat-headed looking. Eared has black “bonnet” which covers eye and extends down covering more than half of head including below the eye except more mottled behind the eye; white confined to a patch on the cheek; skinny neck compared to Horned and mostly dusky, all the way around, contrasting with white cheek patch. Bill shape also different than Horned, with tip of lower mandible curved up more so. This appears to be the same bird reported by the Cunninghams on Nov 6.
