Field sketch of streaking around eyes, and head shape.

This was one of the first twitchable Slaty-backed Gulls on the lower mainland, at least when I was living there. It was first found by Mike Force, and attracted quite a crowd on 22 November -- everyone with a sudden caee of schistisagus flu. It was fairly easy to spot in the field with all the gull, but everyone had to patiently wait for it to raise its wings from time to time to show the famed, "string of pearls." I made a pretty detailed field description, more for myself than to document the bird But here they are; "Slaty-backed Gull; legs-pink. Bill - pale yellow with red dot on lower mandible, larger bill than GWGU. Eye- yellow (bright), dark feathers surrounding eye with dark line of feathers through eye and then curiing up behind. Head shape - longer than GWGU, rather square/flat top head, more square than adjacent GWGU; head covered with mottled brown feathers, streaked to upper breast. Back - slate great, a dark grey not black. Tail all white. Seemed to have pinkish orbital ring. Size appeared larger than adjacent GWGU. Wing tips black with white tips Wings, rather pale undersides observed in flight and preening. White trailing edge on secondaries quite wide compared to GWGU. Tongue tips seen on both underside and topside of P5 to P7."
