Female type. Possibly a first year male. Slightly larger than Green-winged Teal, with which it was associating. Face pattern quite distinct with bold white supercilium, brightest behind the eye. Dark line through eye, and pale area at base of bill. Whitish, unstreaked throat. Breast a slightly warmer tone than breast of nearby Green-winged Teal. Overall bird seemed to be more 'horizontal' than Green-winged Teal, probing in water with its bill, in shoveler style. Green-winged Teal were upending regularly, and the Garganey was not. Dark scapulars and tertials, with noticeable white edges. Bird lacked the buff or whitish patch on the sides of the undertail coverts, seen on Green-winged Teal. In flight, upperwings noticeably gray contrasting with rest of body. Bold white trailing edge to secondaries, thin greenish speculum with white border on top as well. Bill appeared larger than Green-winged Teal and was gray overall. Spent most of its time in the S.E. corner of the lake, but also flew over to S.W. corner of lake for a time, during which it was difficult to spot. Present from 1 PM to 4:20 PM. The landfill wants all birders out by 4 PM. You must stop in at office, sign waiver and obtain high visibility vest.
