Immature: Yellow underparts marked with dull brown streaks on upper breast. Head completely blond except for narrow brown eyeline. Bill yellow. Observed perched in small tree at edge of third oxidation pond (across the pond from the compost area). When it flushed, it flew to the top of a large Enterolobium cyclocarpum tree (Guanacaste) where the Black Vultures roost at night. In flight, tail was finely barred. The rectangular white patches at the base of the primaries contrasted with the brown wings. At one point, the bird gave a series of short harsh calls, pointing its beak upwards. Much smaller than nearby Crested Caracaras. Paul Stufkens obtained many photos of the perched bird (see his eBird list to see a photo). This is probably the same bird that I reported 5 days ago flying over the central part of campus (about 1 km to the west). May also be the same bird that John van Dort photographed in July, about 30 km SW at Laguna Villa Royal.
