Sandhill Crane
観察結果の詳細
This entry is written from my journal notes while at Cornell University Class of 1969. I have attached my notes with a small sketch that were written on 20 Oct 1968. As you can see in the text, my birding companions were unsure of it at first, but it eventually stopped foraging on the ground and stood up so we could see the head, and then it took flight. The bustle-like tail was seen as was the dark patch from the bill to the top of the head. It was likely red, but the light and distance of about 500 feet made it look black. When it flew its neck was stretched out full length. We drove and talked to Dr. Spofford about our finding. She grilled us well about it, and was somewhat hesitant at best. This bird was shot later in the day while hunting season was going on in the same area, and the bird was eventually taken to Dr Spofford and others at CLO. It died of its injuries. I believe this was the first state record of this species. My notes indicated I was going to write it up for the Kingbird, but I haven't ever looked to see if it happend. I believe the next record of a Sandhill Crane in NY state per eBird was 5 May 1983 at Derby Hill, Gerald Smith, there may have been other records documented but not entered into eBird.
