After initial trolling with speaker, I did not continue once I heard birds respond. Most calls are not in response to playback.

I heard nasal awwp and eh-eh calls on Leighton between Montgomery and Congress. One bird also gave rather low and gutteral but still nasal growling cahs. The crows uttering these sounds were together in the tops of trees on the west side of the street, using both maples and spruces. At one point the two touched bills together, with beaks slightly open. These seemed to act as a pair. When an American Crow called to the southeast in the direction of Broadway Park, one of the Fish Crows called and flew off in pursuit that direction. Given the behavior and close association of these two birds and the apparent territorial defense, I feel comfortable assigning a breeding code. In terms of appearance, both birds appeared to be comparatively slender-tailed and small, but I did not see these next to American Crow, which I had seen many of today. The wings were narrower and perhaps more "pointed" when spread and flying overhead. Otherwise, there was no way to diagnose these without vocalizations. These Fish Crows are at the northeasternmost point of their range. They were first found in this area by Robert Ostrowski in 2018.
