I heard the distant Eastern Whip-poor-will about 8:23 pm. I was parked at the roadside parking lot on the west side of the creek just up from the river trail. The whip-poor-will vocalized spontaneously, not in response to playback. It vocalized with a short series of calls two times. As is reportedly frequently the case, the whip-poor-will vocalized a bit earlier than the Common Poorwills and Chuck-will’s-widows usually do, just as the twilight began to deepen. It was distant, in the wooded area across the creek and to the southeast of where I was parked. Its vocalization was clearly audible, a good deal better than I was able to obtain with the recording with an Olympus WS-823 micro-recorder and a ME-40 Olympus directional microphone. There was also significant noise and traffic from people exiting the park at that time.
