Subtitle: Maoripsalta alta. Habitat where specimen was collected: Snow-melt areas of Wairau-Rainbow divide, Marlborough. Rockfaces. 6,800 feet. This tape should be played with bass attenuated and treble boosted, with the volume turned low, in order to get the most natural reproduction. Mr. Dugdale phoned asking me to come to his laboratory to tape this insect he had captured at above habitat, and send a copy of the tape to Dr. Charles A. Fleming who (with Dugdale) is revising the taxonomy of NZ cicadas. The insect was placed in a screened cardboard box under a desk lamp whose heat warmed it and caused it to "sing". They now prefer this technique to field recording, believing that the difference in sound between natural and controlled conditions is insignificant in cicadas. This tape, Dr. Fleming writes, makes his collection of NZ cicada tapes complete. Maoripsalta alta. Equipment Notes: 1.5 kc hi-pass filter.
