A female Pileated Woodpecker aggressively pecks at a European Starling, showing her dominance at the suet feeder. This behavior surprised me, as the Pileated Woodpeckers have always been very shy. I have never seen them defend their territory with the presence of another bird before this incident.

The European Starlings have unfortunately found my back yard feeders. I was afraid that they would prevent the Pileated Woodpeckers from coming, as they are always on the suet feeders. Today, I witnessed the female Pileated Woodpecker aggressively pecking at the Starling, to scare it off the suet feeder. The Northern Flicker also chased the Starlings off the suet feeder, so it appears my regular birds stand their ground with regard to the invasive species.
