Birds studied well, although lighting was an issue. At the end, when it was quite dark, they allowed close approach. Overall large size and long bills of many individuals made us immediately think of this species. Long sloping forehead, narrow bill-base, subtly curving bill (without kink near tip, as in Short-billed), distinctive eye arcs, thin supercilium, unstreaked necks and breast and overall dark tone were additional field marks supporting this species. We also heard them call while feeding several times, and those calls matched the Long-billed calls we listened after we got home. Many photos taken. In this first photo, note how the bird in the middle has a flatter back, a stronger supercilium and a rounder head (less sloping forehead) than the two birds on the right. The middle bird is a Short-billed Dowitcher.
