***Very rare in Tompkins county. The first found in the county since Fitz's flock of 45 that flew over his house. I was debating whether or not to come here when I received a call from Tom Schulenberg who said that he had a dowitcher. Given the date, I thought Long-billed was a strong possibility so I decided to have a look. I arrived to find Tom still looking at the bird. My impression was that it was a Long-billed based on the overall shape, pattern of tertials, the fairly clean white belly with thick smudgy bars along the bottom of the flanks and the lack of speckles near where the breast and belly met. To confirm, I played some LBDO recordings on my iPhone and the bird quickly looked up at me. After a few more calls on the phone, the bird gave a single sharp "keep" in response to playback. I stopped playing and the bird resumed feeding.
