NOTES: Notes from data sheet: Additional recordists: David D. Ward and Deborah Jean Ward. Habitat: seacoast of New Zealand. Level of Recording: -20. Physical Description of Sound: Snorts, hisses, burps, growls. Warning sounds; showed belligerency. Laying on rocks. Equipment used: 2-transistor, battery-operated, grounded-emitter preamplifier. 18"/4.5" parabola; Magnemite 610-E 7050 1/2 track; ElectroVoice 647-A microphone. "Having taped seals in Hawaii, I wished to record the fur seals common at certain spots along the New Zealand coastline. One such place was the rocky promonotories between Kaikoura and its South Bay. Our family helped carry the gear and we walked the mile out to the colony. A specimen was found lying on some flat rocks. As we walked up to it, it expressed its objections. David held the small parabola while I operated the recorder. Later, near Farewell Spit, I came up close to some others of the same species; their vocalizations were exactly the same.".
