The bird hadn't been seen since morning. After speaking with a young man who lives at the house about the habits of the bird as he knew them, I drove to the greenhouse to the north to look on the buildings and fences. (I didn't bother with the farm buildings to the west, as the group from Illinois had already been actively scanning there.) A quick look at the greenhouses, and the need to go back won out. Before taking the left off the road and onto the drive, a bird on a wire caught my eye. It seemed bluebird-y through the dirty windshield with the sun on the wrong side of it. Then it flew peculiarly, toward the stakeout. After hurrying to the parking area, I noticed a tawny bird on top of a post near the compost pile... and every person watching for the bird looking in the opposite direction! No matter, as it proceeded to put on a show after everyone's eyes were on it. As anticipated, it eventually found its way to the woodpile.
