[TAB comments] One was found about two-thirds of the way out to Lausen Sea Mount (33.425518, -117.908845), and flew about in front of the boat for a couple minutes before moving off out of sight. It was temporarily harassed by a Pomarine Jaeger. This bird showed the clean white under sides and mostly dark upper parts with distinctive blackish M-shaped pattern across the wings and back that is typical of this species. It was also noticeably larger and had a more buoyant flight style than the numerous Black-vented Shearwaters we encountered today. To my knowledge, there are only three previous confirmed records in Orange County: one off Dana Point 5 Sep 1992 and one off Pelican Point 16 Oct 1994 (both of these published in Hamilton & Willick 1996), and one photographed off Dana Point in Jul 2009 by John Avise (http://nathistoc.bio.uci.edu/birds/procellariiformes/Puffinis%20bulleri/index.htm).
