One female at mouth of Salt Creek to Salton Sea, 25 January 2006. Weather clear, no wind, with 60-70 deg. F. We heard about this diver from other birders and feel we found the right goldeneye after we knew to look for it. She was in with many other Common Goldeneyes, Ruddy Ducks, Coots, Gulls and the Mergansers. They were all bunched in close to each other and close to shore when we were there late morning. We were able to pick her out because of her all yellow-orange bill (a little bit of dark spotting on the sides?), dark brown head with steeply sloped forehead, and differently shaped head compared to the COGOs. Her head sloped out toward her back at an angle different from the COGOs nearby, (there's went more straight down to the neck), and then was clipped short across the bottom to the neck, like the barber had been busy with the electric shears. Otherwise she looked similar to the other goldeneyes, we forgot to note whether her bill was shorter than the COGOs.
