These two breeding plumage males were walking along the shoreline closest to the road near the observatory. Neither of us ever remembers seeing them in breeding plumage before, so we were very excited. We've most often seen them in their pale gray nonbreeding plumage - or seen females. What a treat to see them in breeding plumage. We have lots of photos. You could see all the distinguishing field marks. Both had black, straight and thick bills. Both were very white underneath, with a rufous neck and side of the face, black legs, the unique three forward pointing toes and no hind toes, and the broad white wingstripe in flight with dark edging (see photos of them in flight). They were working the edges of the shoreline rather quickly together and staying close to each other. Like other birds, they took flight when the Good Year blimp flew overhead, but they returned to the same area to forage.
