NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 82. Bulk reel: 385I arrived at parking area 4:35 AM, at Km 21 @ 5:05 AM at which time I heard a display and some "ao" calls way up the slope of the quebrada (ravine); that was first activity noted. By 5:20 AM, although no activity in my location, there were numerous displays up the slope of the ravine and with each of these a vocal reaction by a bird, presumably a female, but in the form of a "scream" rather than the usual call.At 5:26 AM I heard a display on the slope directly above me, the first one in my particular location. At ~ 5:29 there was another display on slope above me, after which the bird alighted in the trees overhead. The recording begins here with the bird's "ascending whistle."a) 24/V/73. 5:30 AM. Weather: Fair to clear; last half moon. Ascending series whistles; after a long silence (1+ min.) the bird displayed (when I sensed the bird was about to display--it's "intention movements"--I changed the focus of the reflector hoping to avoid direct focus on the display, but the bird displayed right into the beam but apparently the sound is "natural." Cf. comment under part b). The display apparently began immediately upon takeoff. Although "in focus," this display is good because of a constant sound amplitude throughout. Quality: 1-2. Level: +3. LN.Again focus on bird: one series whistle (changed focus) after 30-35" silence a display; answering vocalizations by female. This display gets louder (bird approach effect). Quality: 1-. Level: +3.After this there were two more displays but only the second is saved (traffic inteference on the first). Again it seems fairly clear that bird began display upon take off. This display has a "going away" effect (but has howlers). Quality: 2. Level: +3.b) 25/V/73 @ 5:32 AM. Weather: Cloudy, fair. I arrived @ km 21 @ 5:25 AM. No sign of guan activity here nor up the slope of the ravine until ~ 5:30 AM. The first display at my location came @ 5:32 and in ~ same place on the first display noted here yesterday (the one @ 5:26 AM). This first display today was recorded. After this there were several "series whistles" (not saved: low volume due to recording with open mike); the last of these only is saved together with the display that followed. This display sounded to my ear (I did not have the phones on) just the same (+/-) as the first display recorded yesterday.b) The first display "approach effect" of this bird today (at least, that I heard), answering vocalizations by female. Quality: 2. Level: +3. 203 tape. LN. No parabola [for part b].The final "series whistle" and the display that followed. The last display given today. (Although the bird gave numerous " series whistles" after this last display, it did not display again.).
