Relatively large grebe with a thick, heavy bill showing some yellow at the base, and a noticeable white patch on the side of the face. The bill consistently appeared slightly downturned, giving the head a distinctive sloping profile. Overall structure and facial pattern were consistent with Red-necked Grebe and unlike the smaller, thinner-billed Horned or Eared Grebes.
