Chestnut-sided Warbler at Haley Nelson per Doug Willick: A somewhat smallish warbler, appeared roughly similar in size to an OCWA that it was seen with in fairly close proximity for a few moments. The bird appeared to be a fairly uniform light grayish below, and seemed to be slightly paler on the belly than on the breast area (most views were looking up at the bird from a steep angle, but fortunately I was also able to get a few side view angles, as well as views of the upperparts when it attempted to grab food items down below, showing its back, crown, etc.). I saw the undersurface of the tail fairly well which appeared to be medium to darkish gray with prominent, large, white patches in the outermost rectrices. Face appeared light gray, and looked completely blank except for a thin, but complete, white eyering. I saw zero chestnut color on the sides or flanks, so would assume this was a first-fall female. The wing color was not noted well, but believe showed some greenish to olive edgings on the primaries and secondaries. Two bold wingbars were seen on the wings which, though whitish, appeared to show a hint of very pale yellowish like some CSWAs can show. The back showed a bright lime-green color (the crown was likely the same color but didn’t make specific note of that during the somewhat brief time getting to observe the bird’s upperparts). The bill was fairly typical of Setophaga genus warblers (narrow as in all warblers but not as sharp-tipped as is typical of warblers, for example, in the Leiothlypis genus). Briefly had a view when I could see it was holding its tail at a slightly upwards angle. Did not hear any vocalizations from the bird (such as the Yellow Warbler like “chip” note that migrants will occasionally give). Only one photo was obtained (attached) which is not the best for full documentation of what was seen in the field.
