Dettagli dell'osservazione
A medium-sized shorebird associating with a group of LEYE. Nearly identical in size, but with more brownish overall tones. First observed alone and noticed a brownish shorebird with a more stout, slightly curved bill. The brownish color had me consider PESA, but the legs were much too long and the posture of the bird was more upright with a small, rounded head. I next considered STSA, but the bird lacked the bold eyeline that is expected with that species. Eventually the bird flew across the pond and the rump pattern was distinct. The brown of the back descended into a distinct V on the rump with white background and brown on the tips of the tail feathers. Legs were dull brownish yellow, not bright like LEYE. Observed with binoculars at first and then later in scope when other birders arrived. Photographs take with phone and by others with camera. The birds eventually flushed and were last seen flying west over the horizon. Other ponds were checked but the bird could not be relocated. It is worth checking again or other ponds in the area. First Rockingham County record and a Life Bird for me.
