Medium-large all-dark shearwater with a long, sharply-hooked bill and pale underwings that were whitest at the median primary coverts. Seen briefly on the water just outside a large bait ball and observed in flight as it flew off towards another bait ball. Flight consisted of stiff-winged bouts of flapping followed by short glides low over the water. Photos
