NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 1. Bulk reel: 197. a) 11 May 1965. 8:30 AM. Booming type song. Quality: 2. Level: +10. [Recordist did not indicate type of microphone used. He indicated that he used a parabola but did not specify make/model.]. apparently alarm notes (the kind that Schaefer says are "squirrel-like"). It may be that the bird heard me working through undergrowth trying to get closer to it, but it apparently didn't yet see me. Quality: 2. Level: +10. No parabola. Then booming-type song again. Quality: 2. Level: +10. Then more booming-type song, closer and louder. Quality: 1-2. Level: +5. b) 11 May 1965. 9:30 AM. I tried playback of above song. The bird came close, walked up and down a fallen log about 5 m. in front of me, then went further on, then came back and on up hill. After a while it started to sing again, but farther away than before and could not again be attracted by playback. Also heard are Geotrygon linearis and Trogon collaris. 14 May 1968. Same location but km 24.5. A rough imitation by PAS of song heard this morning at ~ 7:00. Level: +10. [Recordist did not indicate type of microphone used. He indicated that he used a parabola but did not specify make/model.] 7.5 ips. Then more from 1 July 1968 when bird was singing starting at 5:30 AM. (All seem pretty rough. (At end added recording attempt at 5:30 AM; clear; discard if can't filter.) In background of Cut 13) of Penelope argyrotis can be heard faintly some pauxi. (16 Jan 1969; km 24.5) 3 Feb 1969 - Rancho Grande; Pica de la Toma. This species is singing regularly here these days, even when P. argyrotis has been relatively quiet. My imitation given at this time while listening to the birds is exactly like the form graphed form the song in 1965. I also noted that the bird at times does not include the final phrase in its song. 13 Feb 1969 - Rancho Grande, km 25. Clear: At least two birds heard singing in this general area today at 6:15 AM. Response to playback: Approach.
