NOTES: Recordist's Notes: Calling in vicinity of nest hole. yg. calling from nest. near nest hole in tree opposite Stewart Campsite 7.5" Q 2 Also: stream flow [This recording contains many "peek" Call Notes and at least 77 Short Rattles of BNA (see also Figure 17L of Winkler, H., and L. L. Short. 1978. A comparative analysis of acoustical signals in pied woodpeckers (Aves, Picoides). Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist. 160:1-110). I am less certain about which calls are represented by the longer series at 0:24-0:27 and 1:31-1:34 (possibly the "Ree-u-u-u-u-u" or the "tuk-tuk-tuk... of BNA?). What is also unclear to me is how many of these calls were given by the adults and how many by the nestlings (e.g., the longer series above were both preceded by what appear to be begging calls by what I suspect are almost ready to fledge nestlings at 0:15-0:24 and 1:22-1:30). I further suspect these latter calls correspond to the "Loud Chirp Calls" of BNA, or conversely the "Squeak" Call of Winkler and Short (though the latter authors did not describe this particular call for this species).
