Non-breeding adult. Medium-sized wading bird with compact body, long neck, long legs, and long, curved bill. Foraging in the mud and in shallow water. Observed for about 1 hour. Startled by dog walker and dog, took flight, circled 1/4 mile distant, returned to spit to resume feeding. Photos.
