The Chimney Swift roost at 65 Park Terrace West was viewed from north of the intersection at West 218th Street and Park Terrace West. The viewing spot is east of the main entrance to the Baker Athletics Complex. From here, the chimney is in full view. 🔲 Sixteen (16) swifts were observed entering the roost during the count. I counted the swifts with handheld binoculars. The first swift entered the roost during the sunset minute, and the last entry was during the 18th minute after sunset. Sunset on June 24th is at 8:31p (2031) [based on NOAA's Map]: • -10' before SS (+0) • +10' after SS (+5): 2031, 2035, 2037 (2), 2040 • +20' after SS (+11): 2041, 2046, 2047 (2), 2049 (7) • +30' after SS (+0): TOTAL = 16 Only one (1) swift was seen exiting the chimney during the 15th minute after sunset. Fifteen (15) swifts appeared to be occupying the chimney by the end of the count but there were breaks in the observing due to short food/drink breaks (see bullet points below). The highest number of entries per minute was seven (7) which occurred during the 18th minute after sunset. All other per-minute counts were either singles or doubles. The count started at 2025.0 (6 min. before sunset) and ended 40 minutes later at 2101.0 (30.0 min. after sunset). • Several heard at the start - 2+. • 🔲 Three were flying low just west of Park Terrace West with one appearing to drop into a roost at ~2025 on the east edge of 560 West 218th Street (see attached for an overhead view). • 🔲 One appeared to drop into the Park Terrace East roost at 2031. • Another at 2035. • Two at 2037. • One at 2040. • One at 2041. • One in and one out at 2046. • Two at 2047. • Seven at 2049. • Activity shut down by 2051. I was eating a cappuccino muffin and drinking an Earl Grey tea through 2050 causing short breaks in the observing. The viewing was continuous from 2050 until 2101.0.
