Dettagli dell'osservazione
Seen off an on for at least half an hour as it sailed over the inner waters behind the Long Beach breakwater between the beach and the two oil islands. Distant but identifiable views though frequently broken by bands of fog rolling in. Large bird with immensely long, narrow, pointed wings. Long tail. Long bill with conspicuous hook at tip. Bill was a silvery gray color. Immature. Bird overall was black except for the head and neck which were white and a small diamond shaped area of white on the belly that was narrowly connected to the white neck between two black bands protruding down the sides of the breast. Long bouts of gliding on thermals and the onshore wind as it lazily circled over the water. At 12:40 it sailed to shore, crossed the southern tip of the Belmont peninsula, circled over the San Gabriel River at Marina Ave before slowly drifting inland to the southeast and out of sight.
