Dettagli dell'osservazione
Adult male, apparently on territory along trail across the road from the Vashon Island viewpoint. First detected by hearing a chase call. It sounded like a rough version of zee-chuppity-chup at the start and ended with the chigga-chigga Anna’s call. A few minutes later it was seen silhouetted in some alder branches. The shape and size seemed more in line with Rufous, with a skinny tail and shorter bill and small head. The gorget was more constrained than Anna’s. Eventually we observed it in slightly better lighting, and picked up only green colors on the sides, no confirmation of rufous tones or red in tail but the lighting was still poor. It began singing several times, a more rudimentary and repetitive version of the usual Anna’s song. It was also heard clicking while foraging in salmonberry flowers, which sounded different from Anna’s. iPhone recordings of song and clicking calls. No other hummingbirds seen in the area.
