Revisited the area of Cerrado from the previous day and refound the bird that we had recorded then. Playback was used but the bird was slower to respond, possibly due to the cool and breezy conditions of the evening. However, after c.10 minutes, when the bird did eventually respond, it was more vocal than the previous evening, giving the frequent calls. The calls sounded distant but the bird was moving around us. Once it sounded settled we scanned the Cerrado with a torch and picked out the birds eye-shine, sat on the floor. Here we approached and were able to get to within 1.5 meters of the bird without disturbance. Photographs were taken to document the sighting. When the bird did fly we were able to observe the peculiar wing structure, notably the black outer primaries with noticeable white fringing. A second eye shine was seen during the initial scan of Cerrado which could have involved another individual of this species, or equally another nightjar species, but further exploration revealed no further sign.
