Recorded: The best way to detect Least Bitterns' presence is by the common loud call they make year round: https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/255557221#_ga=2.252248384.854218367.1596041697-515772310.1596041697 Outside of the breeding season you can rarely see them as they fly around little and stay hidden, but, especially early in the morning, they will make this call while hidden in the marsh. I walked the length of the lake on the west and south side of the lake on a four-hour visit. The lake is almost solidly surrounded by bullrush (and is hard to see the lake itself due to the dense bullrush), which, by my experience from living in Florida near a location with many Least Bitterns, is their favorite habitat (better than cattail).
