A Grey Butcherbird perching and calling. The Grey Butcherbird (Cracticus torquatus) is widely distributed in Australia, occupying a wide range of habitats from arid to temperate zones. Butcherbirds prey on small vertebrates as well as other birds and on insects, and their name relates to their habit of storing prey by impaling it on thorns or sharp twigs. Grey Butcherbirds have a loud, melodious song – this bird was perching and calling on the road edge near the southern boundary of Kalbarri National park in Western Australia. Elevation: 7 m. Date added to IBC: September 11, 2018.
