A Chiloe Wigeon swimming and feeding amongst Myriophyllum. Chiloe Wigeons (Mareca sibilatrix) occur widely throughout southern South America and on the Falkland Islands. They inhabit a range of freshwater habitats – marshes, lagoons, slow-flowing rivers and lakes and are sometimes found on the coast. Chiloe Wigeons are largely vegetarian, but also take some seeds, small invertebrates and small fish. They tend to be shy ducks, and usually swim away when approached. I was lucky that this one seemed unconcerned as it continued feeding amongst emergent Myriophyllum in the Tres Puentes wetland (Mirador Humedal 3 Puentes) in Punta Arenas in southern Chile. Elevation: 4 m. Date added to IBC: March 2, 2019.
