Australian Pelican chicks in creche being harassed by older juveniles. The Australian Pelican (Pelecanus conspicillatus) occurs widely on inland and coastal waters of Australia and New Guinea. It is the only pelican found in Australia, and is medium-sized for a pelican, weighing between 4-13 kilograms (8.8 to 28 pounds) with a wingspan up to 2.6 metres (8.5 feet). There are two Australian Pelican rookeries on Penguin Island, a wildlife sanctuary in the Shoalwater Islands marine Park 50 km south of Perth, Western Australia. Young Pelicans of different ages were gathered in a creche on a hill on the southern end of Penguin Island. The larger juveniles harassed some of the younger, smaller birds by grasping their heads and necks in their bills. The smaller birds attempted to escape by wriggling deeper into the creche. Elevation: 11 m. Date added to IBC: November 20, 2018.
