Perhaps an Am. Coot X Common Gallinule hybrid, a "Galoot." It had a large, bulbous, red shield (callus); bright yellow basal 2/3rds of upper mandible; tip of bill white with partial dark ring. Body pattern most like coot, with nothing else suggesting gallinule influence. Eye red; toes lobed. The amount of yellow seemed to be far outside expected variation in coot bill coloration (the photos don't quite do it justice). I don't think it was an exotic zoo inmate. There may have been a second, a bird with a deformed bill but with same bill coloration.
