Dunlin photographed by Curtis A. Marantz on 28 October 2017 at the sewage ponds associated with Lake Tamarisk, Desert Center, Riverside County, California. This is the first Dunlin that I have seen at Desert Center, where the species is at best very rare.
פרטי השורה
A bird seen foraging in the northeast corner of the sewage pond was somewhat smaller than nearby Killdeer and plump with tapered wingtips, a rounded head, and a slim bill that was about as long as the head was wide and seemingly with a slight droop to the tip. The head, neck, breast, and sides were medium-gray, but the throat was whitish, and the belly and flanks were white, which gave this bird a hooded appearance. The back and wings were about the same shade of gray as the head and neck, but I noted paler fringes to the wings that gave them a somewhat scaly appearance. The bill was black and the eyes and legs were dark. To the best of my recollection, this was the first Dunlin that I have seen at Desert Center.
