We played calls of both species to see if it would respond, but there was no or little response. It then started calling on its own and that is when I recorded this.

**MEGA** First fully-confirmed record for Nova Scotia. The only other report was of a large yellow-bellied kingbird on 18 July 1976 by Robie Tufts, but the identification process did not consider Couch's Kingbird, of which Tropical looks extremely similar. In 1976, Couch's Kingbird was considered a subspecies of Tropical and only re-gained full species status after the April 1979 publication of 'Two Sibling Species of Tyrranus (Tyrannidae)' in The Auk by Melvin A. Taylor Jr. Because the 1976 bird was not identified to subspecies, that record must be for a Topical/Couch's Kingbird. Initially found by Ervin Olsen at the southern end of the Cleveland Rd at about 10:30 am. He circulated photos to Mark Dennis, Johnny Nickerson and I. The large beak, very vibrant yellow underside and lack of white outer vanes to the outer tail feathers meant Couch's/Tropical. Nearby birders were called and I arrived first. The bird was not found on the Cleveland Rd. I drove around the Chebogue Rd and the Hilton Rd and then made my way down the Chebogue Pt Rd where I found it again at about 11:10 am. Paul Gould arrived and we tried to get more photos, but the bird kept flying south and perching on the wires. Laurel Amirault showed up and it kept flying south. It flew down to civic 382 Chebogue Pt Rd (about 1.9 km south of where I had first seen it at 11:10 am) by the time Mark Dennis, Sandra Dennis and Mike MacDonald showed up. Up until then we had never heard it vocalize. Mark played calls of both Couch's and Tropical and finally the bird vocalized. I was able to record it. Comparing what we heard with the calls on the Sibley's App, we concluded that it was a Tropical Kingbird. Ronnie d'Entremont showed up and saw it at civic 382. With each passing vehicle, the bird would fly up from the wires and would generally keep heading south. By the time I left at 12:50 pm, the bird was around 494 Chebogue Pt Rd. Audio recording combined with uneven primary spacing on the folded wing, large bill confidently identify it as a Tropical Kingbird and not a Couch's Kingbird. The plumages of juveniles are said to be unseperable in the field, so I won't comment on that. P10 and P9 ever so slightly notched seem to indicate that it is a hatch-year male.
