Found previous day by Jon Dunn & Kimball Garrett. Documented for NAB. COMMENTS: We were happy to get our first Jaeger for Inyo County and felt lucky the Jaeger was still there on day two after originally being found by Jon and Kimball the day before. LOCATION: Owens Lake at the Sulfate well which is west from LADWP office buildings near Keeler on the old lake bed. We parked at the well site and saw the Jaeger while we were looking west at the shallow pond. It was next to the bubbling well site water in a little watered inlet. Ron Overholtz spotted it in the distance and we were able to get closer to it to see and photograph it better. EXPERIENCE WITH THIS SPECIES: Limited. We’ve seen a few in Mono County. This is our first Jaeger ever for Inyo County. We’ve had three Jaegers in Mono County, with two LTJA total. An adult at Dechambeau Ponds on Aug. 24, 2002, and an imm. at Crowley Lake Aug. 27, 2004. We’ve had two Parasitic jaegers over the years. One on California coast south of SF at Pillar Pt. in 1997 and the other at Crowley Lake 2007. It wasn’t a juvenile because the timing is off as they are probably still on their nesting grounds in the Arctic. This is a sub-adult because it lacks the adult breeding plumage which shows a pale head with a black-cap.
