I got pointers from Cliff Weisse and also found the following reference to ID these birds: http://www.surfbirds.com/ID%20Articles/dowitchers1005/dowitchers.html There were 2 Dowitchers that were nearby but separated from the main flock of 15-20 Long-billed Dowitchers. These two stood out initially to me from the flock based on plumage and color. I also noticed the bill was different. I did not hear any vocalization. The main defining characteristic I noticed was the slight downcurve in the last 1/3 of the bill from the tip. Other subtle structural differences include more obtuse loral angle, steeper forehead and the lower back is less indented and appears to have a stouter rear and less of a "cocked" tail appearance. I personally have a hard time consistently recognizing these traits so I don't put a lot of weight on them for my ID. Plumage is variable but the tail had as much white if not more than the black band width in the tail feathers. The flanks look evenly barred front to rear. Other plumage characteristics were difficult for me to determine.
