An adult male at Went Hill, west of Birling Gap. Very skulking - one brief view of bird perched and three in flight. A large sylvia warbler with jet black head and ear coverts gradually merging into sale grey upperparts. Throat and upperbreast white contrasting strongly with grey upperparts. Flanks washed greyish. Tail grey with white outer tail feathers. Eye ring reddish. Call ed several times, a harsh 'cha-cha-cha-cha'. The 6th British record, present from 23rd August - 30th October.
