Rare overwintering species; however, multiple SEOW (up to 8 or 9 IIRC) have overwintered at this location in recent winters. Medium-sized owl with boldly patterned plumage—darker coloration and bold pattern rules out Barn Owl. Distinctive pale outer patch in primaries visible while perched and on the wing. Hunting like a harrier—agile, with sharp swoops into grasses below. Perched on thin shrubbery several times in between periodic hunting soon after sunset. Pics.
