one individual showing characteristics of subspecies balearica, according to "Identification of Mediterranean Flycatcher (Dutch Birding 41_2019)". See pictures. I am not sure how certain this ID is and if it is possible from these photos, but I am leaning towards of ssp. balearica here, especially with the photos from moritz. --Crown with white base of feathers, creating a dark streaking on the top of the head. -- Ear coverts darker than both head markings over and neck markings below. I am unsure of how well this feature fits this bird, I was not able to find many reference pictures to see how well defined this should be in balearica birds. --Throat: generally light, but this individual shows some darker streaks on the throat. These seems to me more fitting for nominate ssp. striata. Especially the area directly under the ear coverts has some dark streaks, though some reference birds identified as balearica also showed some streaks in that specific area, so I am unsure of how extensive these can be... -- back coloration: I find these feature not very clear, to me it appears as if the back is more pale and non-marked, giving the bird a "clean" appearance. The rump appears to be a bit darker. --Flank and Breast: Unfortunately we were not able to capture the bird's breast fully. The flank appears to be quite pale and clean though. There is a very slight brownish wash towards the lower flank. These characteristics may well not be enough to identify the subspecies, the authors mention that photographs of the underwing, as well as measurements of the wing formula might be nescessary to identify vagrants of these subspecies. So maybe it is best to leave this observation as non-validated, but I thought it might be interesting to share this suspicious looking individual.
