Extensive black in the primaries. Two mirrors (P10 and P9) are a perfect match for California Gull.

Adult. First record for the province, if confirmed by the experts. Spotted from Virginia River outflow parking lot. Found it on my first scan of the gulls with scope. It was initially on the Southern side of the lake near some dead trees. Distance ~280 meters. About 18 minutes later it flew directly towards me and landed among a bunch of Herring Gulls ~150 meters directly SW of the parking lot. Initially spotted around ~13:29 +/- 1 minute, and continued to watch it until it flew off towards the North around 13:52. It appeared to land on the Killam Apartment Buildings (the multi coloured one). This, unfortunately, is the only building in the area with a wall surrounding the roof (why?!) which obstructed the view of most gulls on the roof when I scoped it from the end of Nfld Drive and East White Hills Rd. First thing that struck me was the size: slightly smaller than the nearby Herring Gulls, but definitely not as small as a Ring-billed Gull. That in combination with the mantle: slightly darker than the Herrings. The combination of those two features made me immediately wonder about an adult California Gull. Having been falsely excited about this species many many times before, I never did get all that excited this time. I continued to watch it from a distance when it very fortunately relocated on the lake much closer to my observation point. Features in support of this identification: Size - slightly smaller than Herring Mantle - slightly darker than Herring Bill - red gony spot and black distal to the red spot Gape - red gape-line visible in some of the flight shots Head streaking - more extensive on the nape. Legs - dull yellowish! Primaries - P9 is completely grown out, P10 is every so slightly not fully emerged. California Gull has a more advanced moult timing in mid October compared to the Herrings which have almost all dropped their P8-10 now and appear to have stunted wings when at rest, as the new P8-10 haven't grown out yet. Primaries - extensive black, all the way back to P5 which should make this somewhat easy to pick out in flight (Herring and RBGU have much less black in the wing tips). Primaries - the white apical spots (tip of the primaries) are much larger than expected for LBBG. Eye - dark! 23rd species of gull for the province, all of which have been recorded at one point in time within the St. John's CBC circle. A world-wide record?
